County officials say they have made headway in homeless crisis

Los Angeles County officials said Tuesday that a two-year-old program to address homelessness is helping thousands of people even as a growing number of people are at risk amid the current economic downturn.
"I think the county is making some significant progress both in terms of integrating county services with municipalities around the county and with specific projects," Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said.
The update comes exactly two years after the Board of Supervisors approved a $100 million plan to help the estimated 74,000 people who are homeless on any given day in the county.
In a report Tuesday, county Chief Executive Officer Bill Fujioka said the Department of Public Social Services' Moving Assistance program has provided up to $2,000 each to 719 homeless families to help move them into permanent housing.
The DPSS Eviction Prevention program has aided 1,179 families at risk of becoming homeless, and a rental subsidy has been increased from $300 to $500 a month, according to the report.
Meanwhile, tens of millions of dollars have been allocated to various city and community-based organizations to construct affordable housing.
